Caiarossa, although born in the heart of Italy, is not a Tuscan wine like any other: it is created in a cellar built according to the principles of feng shui, an ancient Chinese art that consists in arranging the environment for greater well-being and harmony. The Caiarossa estate is located in Riparbella, in a region of central Tuscany called Val di Cecina, a short distance from the Ligurian coast. It was acquired in 2004 by the Albada Jelgersma family, owners of Chateau Giscours and Chateau du Tertre, who gave it the name Caiarossa which means “red gravel”.

Climate

A sunny vintage, 2017 was one of the warmest in recent years with an early budburst of the vine. The summer of 2017 was very hot and dry since it has not rained for the past 3 months. This very hot climate was nevertheless balanced by significant thermal variations between night and day, accelerating the ripening of the berries. Consequently, the 2017 harvest was the earliest in the Caiarossa estate, starting on August 17 with the Merlot and ending with the last berries on September 20. In summary, 2017 beautifully reveals the sunny expression of Tuscany.

Winemaking

The wine is vinified on a parcel-by-parcel basis in order to preserve the expression of each terroir and grape variety. The vinification is carried out in concrete and wooden vats with slow fermentation and gentle extraction. Once the malolactic fermentation is complete, the wines are transferred to barrels of different sizes and ages according to their own characteristics. The duration of the maturation process varies according to the grape variety and the vintage, ranging from 12 to 20 months.

Tasting notes

Caiarossa has a beautiful intense ruby colour. The nose is delicate with aromas of fleshy fruits and balsamic mineral notes. This is a very intense vintage, with plenty of black cherry, plum, mocha, tobacco and smoky aromas. On the palate, the wine appears smooth and silky, enjoying great richness with fruit and vanilla oak flavours. The finish is long.
