Château du Domaine de l’Église is one of the oldest vineyards in Pomerol, first recorded in 1589. Originally a Church property known as “Domaine de la Porte Rouge,” it stood on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and belonged to the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. Seized during the Revolution and later owned by the Bertin family, the estate was acquired in 1973 by the Castéja family, who have elevated its quality and reputation, making it a highly sought‑after Grand Vin today.
At Château du Domaine de l’Église, environmental stewardship is central: the estate is HVE 3 certified and follows sustainable farming practices, limiting chemical use and favouring mechanical vineyard work. The vines receive meticulous year‑round care — from winter Poussard pruning to spring shoot removal, summer leaf‑thinning and fully manual harvesting.
Winemaking
Vinification is rigorous and traditional, with long maceration, temperature‑controlled fermentation, gentle pressing and malolactic conversion in barrels. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak (60% new), clarified with egg white and racked regularly before being blended and bottled.
Tasting notes
The colour is an intense ruby with violet highlights. The nose is remarkably fresh, revealing nuances of ripe crunchy fruit, spices and liquorice. From the very first sip, the wine impresses with its smooth, dense texture. The finish is gentle, with well‑integrated tannins and an unexpectedly long, fruit‑driven persistence.
