Cognac Grande Champagne AOC |
Since its founding in 1767 by Louis Coutanseaux, Coutanseaux Aîné has embodied French excellence, evolving from a cooper’s workshop into a renowned cognac house dedicated to the terroir of Grande Champagne. Passed down through visionary generations — from Louis and his son Joachim to the Taittinger family — the house earned international prestige, including the title of official supplier to the Swedish royal court. 2014. Its legacy resurfaced in 2014 with the record sale of an exceptionally rare 1767 bottle, and in 2015 the Frerejean Taittinger family revived the brand with an extraordinary Hors d’Âge cuvée, continuing a tradition of craftsmanship dating back to 1767. .
Coutanseaux Aîné draws its identity from the exceptional terroir of Grande Champagne, the Premier Cru of Cognac, where Ugni Blanc thrives and yields wines ideal for long aging. In the cellars, distillation on lees in traditional copper stills reveals the deepest aromatic potential, requiring nine liters of wine to produce one liter of cognac. After a precise double distillation, the eaux‑de‑vie mature for no less than 15 years, beginning in new oak before moving to older barrels. Aged in humid, partially buried cellars, these cognacs develop a perfect balance of finesse, complexity, and expressive character.
The XO Grande Champagne is presented in an elegant, slender decanter that reflects the refined style of this cognac crafted for true connoisseurs. Blended from eaux‑de‑vie aged at least 15 years, it expresses the pure character of its terroir with delicate notes of fresh fruit and spices, its amber hue revealing long maturation in oak. The minimalist design, crowned with a beech‑wood stopper, pays tribute to the house’s cooper heritage, while the bottle itself honors the meticulous expertise of the cellar master. The exceptional presentation box completes the experience: its white evokes the purity of the selected eaux‑de‑vie, and its gold accents recall the hoops of oak barrels, symbolizing the harmony between land and craftsmanship at Coutanseaux Aîné.
The nose is lively, refined and elegant, combining floral notes of vine blossom and white flowers with a well‑defined woodiness that, upon aeration, releases spicy nuances and aromas of vanilla, toasted and roasted oak. On the palate, a crisp, vibrant opening gives way to perfect balance, silky tannins and a powerful structure that leans more floral than fruity. Vanilla returns alongside hints of apricot, pastry butter and caramel, leading to a smooth, harmonious finish.
The XO Coutanseaux Aîné reveals subtle nuances that pair beautifully with the iodized delicacy of fine caviar.
Its excellence has been recognized internationally, earning 95/100 Gold at the New York International Spirits Competition 2023 and a Gold medal at the Global Cognac Masters 2023.
