Nero d’Avola |
Fondo Antico is a family‑run winery in the Trapani area, built on deep respect for Sicilian land and the century‑long winemaking heritage of the Polizzotti‑Scuderi family. Across 80 hectares of vineyards in Contrada Portelli, tradition blends with innovation, resulting in wines that capture the strength, generosity and distinctive character of Sicily.
Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most widespread grape variety, exists on the island in so many biotypes, expressions and interpretations that defining a single profile is nearly impossible. It is an elegant variety, one deeply attuned to the environment in which it thrives; denying it the space it deserves would mean overlooking a central figure of our culture. It is grown at 200 meters above sea level on fresh soils with a balanced presence of limestone and sand. This gives us vigorous Nero d’Avola vines with juicy, violet‑shaded berries. The resulting wine is called Nenè, after the protagonist of Leonardo Sciascia’s story Il Mare Colore Del Vino.
Winemaking
Altitude: 250 m above sea level
Harvest period: from mid‑September
Winemaking: 15 days of skin maceration in large stainless steel vessels at controlled temperature
Aging: about 25% in French oak barrels for one year; the remainder in steel
Tasting notes
Color: ruby with purple nuances
Nose: red fruit and cherry dominate; dried fruit and spices enrich the bouquet
Palate: full and harmonious; cherry and forest‑floor notes return; savoury freshness balances the roundness and lengthens the finish
Food pairings
It is so enjoyable to drink that we have shaped it into a versatile all‑rounder, suitable for both meat and fish, especially when enhanced with Mediterranean spices. It is delightful with its own Risotto al Nero d’Avola with cloves. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats and medium‑aged cheeses, and is pleasant with fish and couscous. It is also worth trying with traditional dishes such as roasted tuna with onions and mint.As a red wine, it also refreshes and cleanses the palate, preparing it for another bite… and another sip. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C
