This producer has been dedicated to cider and Calvados production for three generations. Marquis de Saint-Loup Calvados AOC is distilled in a column still giving the Calvados a very fruity and straightforward style. Their Calvados AOC Pays d’Auge, on the other hand, is distilled in a copper pot still which creates a mellow and full-bodied Calvados. Marquis de Saint-Loup cidre is an IGP Cidre de Normandie (indication géographique protégée). To receive the IGP designation, all apples used to make Marquis de Saint-Loup cidre must be an approved variety and must come from a specially certified geographic area.
About the Calvados
This Calvados AOC Pays d’Auge Réserve from Marquis de Saint-Loup is crafted in the heart of the Pays d’Auge appellation, on a 17th-century estate near the village of Saint Pierre, at a traditional distillery run by the Drouin family.
The apples are pressed only once, and only the first pressing juice is used, ensuring cider of the highest quality.
After fermentation, the cider undergoes a maturation phase lasting several months in oak barrels. It is then distilled in two stages, in accordance with AOC regulations. Following distillation, the calvados is aged for at least four years in carefully selected oak barrels. Each barrel is reviewed annually to ensure consistent quality.
Tasting notes
The appearance is canary yellow, with delightful aromas of fruit and flowers, accented by subtle oak. It has a fuller body than Calvados Fine, with dominant apple notes.
Food pairing
Recommended as a digestif for those who appreciate fruit-forward spirits. More robust than the Selection, this Réserve is also well-suited for cocktails that call for aromatic complexity.
