Murua is located on a small hill near the town of Elciego, historically dedicated to the production of top quality estate wines. The vineyards are divided into 8 plots planted mainly with red grape varieties (Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano and Mazuelo). In order to achieve the best possible expression of the different soils on the estate, particular attention is paid to factors such as soil composition and structure, as well as vine orientation and solar radiation.
Bodegas Murua is committed to quality and artisanal winemaking. For 50 years, the winery has honoured the terroir of its vineyards, focusing on respecting the land and expressing the unique character of each individual plot. These wines have been selected to offer the opportunity to celebrate the winery’s 50‑year history and to raise a glass to all that is still to come.
Bottle 1: Red VEGUÍN DE MURUA GRAN RESERVA
The grapes destined for Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva are selected from very old vineyards, some nearly a century old, located at the foothills of the Toloño/Cantabria mountain range, on the finest plots of Bodegas Murua. The production of this wine does not exceed 16,000 bottles, and it is made only in vintages where grapes of exceptional quality are harvested (generally only three years out of ten). Before release, Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva ages for 8 years in the winery.
Appearance: Intense garnet colour. Aroma: Expressive, delicate and intense, with aromas of liquorice, dried tobacco leaves, wild strawberries, mint, spices and pleasant balsamic notes. Immediately after opening, the wine reveals its finest aromas with elegance. The nose is fine, long‑lasting and complex, with new nuances gradually emerging as it rests in the glass. Palate: A sensation of finesse and elegance from the very first sip. Notes of liquorice, red and black berries appear, along with mint, clove and very ripe wild strawberries. The wine is fresh, persistent and has notable structure, conferred by ageing in oak barrels.
Ageing potential: 20 years. Serving temperature: 17–18 °C. It is recommended to decant the wine and allow it to breathe in the glass so it can fully develop its aromatic and flavour potential.
Bottle 2: White MURUA BLANCO FERMENTADO EN BARRICA
The grapes are harvested manually following a traditional process. At the winery, an optical sorting machine is used to select each berry individually. The wine fermented for 15 days in new French and American oak barrels. After fermentation, it aged on its lees in the same barrels for nine and a half months before being transferred to Murua’s bottle cellar. A total of 500 bottles were produced for this special edition.
Appearance: Clean and bright, with greenish reflections; straw‑yellow colour. Aroma: Initially intense, fresh and floral, with apple notes; followed by hints of scrubland, fresh chamomile, fennel and fresh tea. After resting in the glass, mineral nuances appear, further enhancing the sensation of freshness. Palate: Fresh entry with very good acidity. Persistent, intense and with good volume. The wine shows character and longevity, remaining balanced on the palate. Its complexity is expressed through chamomile, green tea, fennel freshness and a pleasant touch of honeysuckle, accompanied by aromas from French and American oak.
Ageing potential: 18 years. Serving temperature: 10–16 °C.
