Samalens house comprises quite an atypical distillery: four traditional pot-stills from Armagnac, and four traditional pot-stills from Cognac. The traditional distillation requires experience and continuous tasting during the entire process. To be as precise as possible, cuts are not standardized and depend on distiller’s tastings. Each eau-de-vie is aged in traditional Armagnac 450-liters barrel made of french pedunculate or sessile oaks. They are selected for their thin grain and slight toast to preserve the eau-de-vie aromas without too strong wood treatment. Aged in new barrels first, the Armagnacs are moved in used ones to be matured slowly until their bottling.
Bas Armagnac Single aged 8 years is a distillate produced by the Samalens company, a historic maison operating in the Bordeaux area. To make this prestigious Armagnac, Samalens selects only the best grapes of the ugni blanc vine, the name by which Trebbiano is known in France. The wine distillation process is divided into two distinct phases: on the one hand, 80% is subjected to a double distillation, while the remaining 20% is obtained by continuous distillation. Once assembled, the Armagnac is left to rest for over eight years in oak barrels.
Tasting notes
Nose of vanilla with rose petals and dried fruit (with notes of hazelnut, almond), followed by a light licorice aroma. In the mouth, intensely floral, then licorice in the middle and soft spices.
