This estate has belonged to the same family since time immemorial and has always been passed down through the female line. Thus, the current owner, Jean‑Hubert Delon, inherited it from his paternal grandmother, Georgette Liquard. Although Potensac is located near the river, it sits on the highest point of the Northern Médoc, an area inhabited for a very long time. The word Médoc comes from the expression medio aquae, meaning “in the midst of waters.” The vineyard, established on the finest soils of Ordonnac, now covers 60 hectares of terroir where the character of each grape variety expresses itself very clearly, giving the wine excellent ageing potential.
The vineyards of Château Potensac are located mainly on hills with a limestone subsoil, covered by clay‑gravel ridges with a high gravel content. These limestones are very similar to those found in the Saint‑Estèphe appellation. This unique terroir includes plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc planted over 80 years ago, producing fully ripe and healthy grapes. The very first edition of Féret already mentioned the village of Potensac for the typical character and longevity of its wines.
Vintage 2021
The year was challenging: growth was uneven and required constant attention. Careful work made it possible to harvest each variety at optimal ripeness. The gravelly areas ripened earlier than the clay‑limestone ones. Cabernet dominates this year, providing power and aromatic complexity, while Merlot adds freshness and juiciness. The Grand Vin is structured, complex, precise, elegant, and long‑lasting on the finish.
Winemaking
Harvest: 29 September – 14 October 2021. Traditional Bordeaux method. Aged in oak barrels (15–20% new oak).
Tasting notes
A very refined wine with a dense texture, rich and wonderfully fresh. On the palate it is pure and powerful, with dense, spicy tannins and a deep, brightly aromatic finish. These qualities often make Château Potensac a representative of the “pure Médoc style.”
