Quinta da Devesa carries a remarkable and enduring history. 1844. In 1844, the renowned Baron Forrester marked this estate on the very first map of the demarcated Douro region. However, the most significant chapter of its history began in the last century, in 1941, when the Fortunato family acquired the property, initiating a new era of substantial investment in wine production, with a particular focus on Port wines. Later, references to DOC Douro wines also emerged, further strengthening the estate’s presence in both the national and international wine markets.
Today, Quinta da Devesa remains an independent family‑owned estate, forward‑looking and represented across several international markets. Investments made in recent years have led to increased recognition among wine enthusiasts and specialized critics. All of this is reflected in the numerous national and international awards the estate has earned to date.
Winemaking
The grapes from Quinta are hand‑harvested into small containers and transported to the winery. Vinified traditionally, spontaneous fermentation occurred at temperatures between 20–24°C. About 7 days of maceration after fermentation stoppage ensure excellent extraction. The wine ages in old wooden casks until bottling, which takes place in the second year after harvest.
The vineyards of Quinta da Devesa are managed using sustainable farming practices, in dryland viticulture, in accordance with the guidelines of Sustainable Integrated Production, certified by an independent organization.
Tasting notes
Deep and intense dark ruby colour with violet highlights. Opaque at the centre, it reveals early signs of youth, concentration and ageing potential.
Aroom on väljendusrikas ja kompleksne: esile tõusevad maasikamoosi ja küpsete punaste marjade noodid. Seejärel arenevad elegantsed kannikeseõite nüansid, mida raamivad tumeda šokolaadi ja niiske metsa vihjed — kuiv leht, sammal, metsataimestik.
Expressive and complex nose: initial aromas of strawberry jam and ripe red fruits dominate. It evolves into elegant violet notes, wrapped in nuances of dark chocolate and damp forest — dry leaves, moss, wild vegetation. On the palate, the entry is broad, silky and enveloping, marked by the richness of concentrated ripe fruit. The tannic structure is firm and well‑integrated, giving depth and balance. Red‑fruit compote notes blend harmoniously with cocoa and earthy nuances, creating a complex and distinctive profile. Vibrant acidity adds freshness and length, while the tannins show presence and ageing capacity. Long, persistent and memorable finish.
Decant and serve at 16°C.
