The story of Guasti Clemente began in the post‑war years, when Clemente Guasti founded a winery in Nizza Monferrato, one of Piedmont’s most important wine‑growing areas. He was an innovator, among the first to indicate vineyard origin on labels, introducing the idea of “cru” for his finest estate vineyards and creating the renowned Barbera delle Cascine Nicesi. 1950. In the 1950s he adopted stainless‑steel autoclaves for Martinotti–Charmat sparkling wine production, a pioneering step for the region. Over the decades the winery expanded both nationally and internationally. Today, the third generation — Enrico Piantato — continues Clemente’s vision, strongly supporting the “Nizza” project, which became an official DOCG in 2014. The family’s wine heritage stretches even further back: in 1881 Secondo Guasti emigrated to California, where he founded a city and planted what became the world’s largest vineyard of its time.
Production area Estate vineyards located in the municipality of Nizza Monferrato.
Ageing
Even before harvest, grapes from the oldest vineyards that have reached optimal ripeness are carefully selected, harvested, and vinified separately. The wine then ages in oak barriques (225 L) for as long as needed to develop its noble character. Afterwards, Barcarato rests in the bottle for an additional 12 months before release.
Tasting notes
Colour: very bright ruby red. Aroma: firm, intense, harmonious, with notes of violet. Palate: full and satisfying, with well‑balanced tannins from barrel ageing; robust in character and structure, expanding on the palate with many pleasant nuances.
Food pairing
red meats, game, and rich main courses; its depth also makes it suitable as a meditation wine. Serving temperature: 18–20 °C.
