In the heart of the Roero region, in Vezza d’Alba, the Demarie Giovanni family have been managing their estate for more than three generations with hard work and a real passion for viticulture. The winery has over 20 hectares of vineyards in the districts of Vezza, Castagnito, Castellinaldo and Guarene. The company’s choice to produce wine exclusively from grapes grown on its own vineyards guarantees the authenticity of the product. Demarie is also focused on the sustainability of its wines: by 2020. In 2007, their first wine was awarded BIO product certification.
About the grapes
The Nebbiolo vines covering the Roero hills are a symbol of the tradition, culture, pride and glory of the Roero winegrowers. Nebbiolo wine goes back a long way and is described by Roman authors and medieval writings. The etymological origin of the name is unclear: some believe it comes from the fact that the harvest takes place very late in the season, when the first mists hide the vines, others think it is because of the beautiful bluish-gray color of the skins of these grapes, reminiscent of fog. This grape blooms early and ripens late, allowing the vine to collect a large amount of excellent organic matter for the fruit, thus providing a very complete a composition that is expressed in the rich richness and complexity of the wine. Nebbiolo is the maximum expression of the excellence of local viticulture and has always been intended for bottling. On the steep, sun-drenched slopes of the Roero hills, the Nebbiolo grapes have those qualities of refined elegance that make Nebbiolo inimitable and unique, placing it among the great Italian wines. to the aristocracy.
Winemaking
Local yeast is fermented in temperature-controlled vats with skins for 20-25 days. Aged in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels for an average of 8 months. Minimum full aging before bottling one year. The wine is refined with a clay-based substance and lightly filtered.
Terroir
North of the Tanaro River, the soil is sandy, marl-sandstone, with petrified seashells. Nebbiolo is best planted on open hillsides at an altitude of 250-300 meters. Made in Montebello MGA-s (cru).
Tasting notes
Intense aromas of cherries, currants, wood spices and leather, aging in oak gives this affordable wine Barbaresco sophistication. Strong aromatic notes give way to a mild, medium taste, and the finish takes on a firm but crisp character. The texture and flavor become complex after years in the bottle.
Food pairing
Ideal with fatty foods such as pork or braised ribs. Goes well with hearty semi-hard cow’s milk cheeses. Try it with spaghetti carbonara, chicken pot pie, or classic Tajarin pasta.
