Murua sits on a small hill just outside the town of Elciego, an area historically dedicated to crafting top quality estate wines. The vineyards are divided into 8 plots, mainly planted with red grape varietals (Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano and Mazuelo). In order to achieve the best possible expression of the different soils in the estate, special attention is paid to factors such as soil composition and structure, and the orientation and sun exposure of the grape clusters.

Winemaking

The grapes used to make Veguín de Murua wine have been selected from very old vines, some of which are almost a hundred years old, located at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño mountain range, in the best estates of Bodegas Murua. This particularity limits production to 2,500 kg/ha. The grapes are harvested by hand by professionals who select the best bunches and then, in the winery itself, finish the process on the sorting table.

Alcoholic fermentation began spontaneously, without any intervention, with total respect for the raw material. The fermentation and maceration processes lasted twenty days. Malolactic fermentation was then carried out on the lees in 8,900-litre French oak vats. During the following 25 months, the wine was aged in new 225-litre French and American oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine was gently clarified and minimally filtered before bottling. The rest of the ageing process took place in the bottle itself, in the cellar’s underground cellars, in the total absence of light and vibrations, waiting for the wine to reach its full potential.

Tasting notes

Intense, bright garnet colour. Intense nose, with aromas of dried grass, dried tomato, mint, spices and pleasant balsamic notes. At first, the aromas are complex and ripe, allowing us to sense the power of the wine, but without being able to clearly decipher the details of the aromatic composition. It is only after some time that the aromas become discernible, one by one. The entry is fluid. The character and harmony of the 2015 vintage is perceptible. We can appreciate the important aromatic panel of the Tempranillo and Graciano varieties and the oak from the barrel. This wine has a good volume and a great balance. After some time in the glass we discover the ‘bouquet’ going through fruity aromas, cinnamon, clove, peach stone, toasted almond, mint and spicy notes.

Food pairing

Suitable for accompanying meat and game dishes with elaborate sauces. We recommend decanting and drinking it unhurriedly, allowing it to oxygenate in the glass so that it develops its full aromatic and gustatory potential.
