Quinta da Devesa carries a secular history. In 1844, the well-known Baron Forrester, included this property in what was the first map of the Douro Demarcated Region. But the most important history of this property began last century, in 1941, when the Fortunato family acquired the Quinta, thus beginning a new phase of greater investment in wine production, with a special focus on Port Wines. Later there are also references to DOC Douro wines, which has strengthened its presence in the national and international wine market. Quinta da Devesa remains today an independent family company, oriented to the future, with presence in several international markets. The investment made in recent years has brought greater recognition by wine lovers and specialized critics. The result of all this is also visible through the huge palate of national and international awards achieved to date.

Winemaking

Quinta da Devesa was from the beginning included in the first map of the Douro Demarcated Region, created by Baron Forrester in 1844. Since 1941, when it was acquired by the Fortunato family, is dedicated to the production of Port and Douro wines. Located in the sub-region Baixo Corgo, 10 kms from Peso da Régua, it is situated on a promontory that dominates the affluence of the Rivers Douro and Corgo and from where one can enjoy a majestic panorama that embraces the valleys of those rivers and the region’s mountains. Its 34 hectares, planted with the grape varieties recommended for the region, extend from an elevation of 60m to 500m, partly facing south, receiving an excellent exposure to the sun, and partly facing north, from where it receives the coolest prevailing winds. This diversity in exposure to the sun and wind causes varying levels of ripeness and development that allow for the timing of harvests under optimum conditions. The Port Wines from Quinta da Devesa are produced exclusively from batches vinified and aged on the property. Since 1941, the vintages considered of superior quality by the family winemakers, were stored and aged in wooden casks. These extraordinary wines are now used to produce the Quinta da Devesa Port Wines. This Port with over forty years resulted from a lot of very old wines, existing in Quinta da Devesa, made with the noble varieties used in the demarcated Douro region, aged for decades in wooden casks in the warehouses of Quinta da Devesa. The vineyards of Quinta da Devesa are managed using sustainable agricultural practices, certified in Integrated Production Mode.

Tasting notes

Wine with an average age of over 40 years (45 to 50 years). Notes of roasted nuts and coffee beans. A tropical mix with nuts and an interesting creamy orange / vanilla flavour on the mid-palate. Finishes with several layers of mahogany and molasses, with firmness and a long finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate — “The 40-Year Old Port (technically +40, although that would have buggered up the search engine) has a clear, deep mahogany color, although there a little more reddishness here compared to the 30-Year Old. The nose is more volatile than the 30-Year Old – this is feisty and boisterous and refuses to act its age. I kind of like that and it soon calms down to offer aromas of balsam, cloves, shaved ginger, fig and marjoram. The palate is lively and bright with the right amount of VA to give it a kick without unbalancing the layers of spicy honeyed fruit. Nutmeg, orange rind, black pepper, tamarind and dried apricots toward the finish somehow evoke images of Morocco. Wonderful!”
