The agricultural company was founded in 1993, by Ivan Giuliani, who inherited the farm previously purchased in the 1930s from his grandfather. The spark for this profession was ignited after 1995. At the end of his military service in Friuli, in the midst of vineyards and winemakers who passed on to him their attachment to their land and the best winemaking techniques, Ivan decided that this would be the metier of his life. It is located in Fosdinovo, in the province of Massa, in the northernmost tongue of Tuscany. The company covers about 20 hectares located between Luni, Candia, Cinque Terre and Lunigiana. The harvest is carried out manually and late, so that the grapes achieve a perfect balance between sugars, acidity, polyphenols and aromas. It is wonderful to know that the vines, as many as 8500 per hectare, are planted in this way to make them compete with each other so that the search for food takes place ever deeper. The plant will be stronger and less in need of care.
Winemaking
Wine obtained from terraced vineyards, located overhanging the sea in the municipalities of Riomaggiore, Manarola and Vernazza, composed of local varieties such as Bosco, Vermentino, Albarola and Ruzzese. The total extension of the vineyards is about 1.5 ha, divided into 5 different plots. The soils of the terraces are acid-based, deriving from the decomposition of schists and micascists. The training system is in part pergolas with a height of 1 metre above the ground and a planting density of about 4,000 vines/ha with 80-year-old plants and new plantings instead with a modified Alberello system with a density of 11,000 vines/ha. Harvesting takes place on average in the second half of September. After a short maceration on the skins, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel and left on their own yeasts for the following 6 months. The yield per hectare is 50 quintals. The tannin of the Bosco grape and the aromatic part of the Vermentino meet the acidity of Albarola and Ruzzese in a naturally balanced mix that makes savouriness and freshness its fundamental characteristics. Among the parcels of land owned, the ‘Costa da Posa’, a true natural amphitheatre of pre-Romanesque origin with stone retaining walls, as in the entire area, built 1000 years ago, is absolutely worth mentioning.
