This blend of Léopold Gourmel’s well-aged eaux-de-vie is meant to stand out in, say, a 21st-century cognac. Léopold Gourmel Hors d’Age Quintessence 30 Carats Cognac is still-distilled and aged over 25 years in fine French oak resin, followed by another 10 years in modified casks. This cognac’s signature blend hasn’t been around since the 19th century, which explains why Léopold Gourmel director Nicolas Sinoquet describes Quintessence as “a truly rare and spontaneous pleasure.” Gourmel may not be the biggest cognac producer, but their attention to detail and creative approach to consumer communication has made them a recognized name in the cognac world. They specialize in only grapes from the Fins Bois region of Cognac, which is the oldest subsoil area where the vines can extract the best resources through roots that reach 20-30 meters deep. The soil here is 60% clay, which retains moisture and allows the vines to develop even during long and hot summers. It is also home to the most hilly land in the Cognac region, which allows for exposure and faster maturation, resulting in stronger, richer, more aromatic and mineral wines, which are particularly evident in the Hors d’Age Quintessence 30 Carats Cognac.
