Quinta da Devesa carries a secular history. In 1844, the well-known Baron Forrester, included this property in what was the first map of the Douro Demarcated Region. But the most important history of this property began last century, in 1941, when the Fortunato family acquired the Quinta, thus beginning a new phase of greater investment in wine production, with a special focus on Port Wines. Later there are also references to DOC Douro wines, which has strengthened its presence in the national and international wine market. Quinta da Devesa remains today an independent family company, oriented to the future, with presence in several international markets. The investment made in recent years has brought greater recognition by wine lovers and specialized critics. The result of all this is also visible through the huge palate of national and international awards achieved to date.

Winemaking

The grapes from the Quinta are harvested manually in small containers and taken to the winery to be crushed by foot. Vinified in the traditional way, in granite presses, it produces a wine with excellent extract. Aged in old wooden casks until bottling in the second year after the harvest. Fermentation lasted about 3 to 5 days, producing a wine with excellent extract. The wine was aged for 4 years in old wooden casks. The blend was made in September 2020. LBV 2016 is a traditional LBV, without any hot or cold treatment, and unfiltered, thus preserving all the existing fruit potential. It is ready to drink as soon as bottled, but will age beautifully in a cellar, waiting for complexity. The vineyards of Quinta da Devesa are managed using sustainable agriculture practices, in accordance with the guidelines of Integrated Production of Sustainable Agriculture, certified by an independent organization, recognized by the Portuguese state.

Tasting notes

The LBV comes from a single year, a single harvest, only noble varieties of Quinta da Devesa. It is aged four to six years in barrels before being bottled. It is undoubtedly a distinctive LBV, powerful, challenging, full and harmonious, with very well structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit. After opening the bottle, its apogee still lasts 15 to 30 days.Deep ruby colour, dense and opaque. Very intense and complex nose with notes of ripe black fruit, cocoa and chocolate. In the mouth it is dense, full and harmonious, with flavours of black fruit, dried plum and chocolate. Pleasantly balanced, it has mature and very good quality tannins that lead to a long, sweet and addictive finish. The wine was aged for 4 years in old wood barrels. The blend was made in September 2020.In order to maintain the excellent characteristics of this wine, bottling uses the same method as for the Vintage, without any previous treatments. As it is an unfiltered wine it can be drunk immediately, but will age beautifully in a cellar waiting for complexity. This wine is subject to creating deposit, so it should be decanted before serving.
